Hello my friends! How're you all doing?

As I stated in my previous journal, I'm sorry for my inactivity here on DeviantArt. So much has been going on, and good old DeviantArt has mostly just been a site to broadcast new uploads from! I want to get back into DeviantArt, so I decided to at least show you guys my new Manga.

This one is called Project Valkyrie and is illustrated by my good friend Kaitsu Tokiyas.

You can read Project Valkyrie for free on Tapastic. Six episodes are already up! I hope you enjoy, and please leave a comment letting me know what you think of it! If you like it, then please do share with your friends! tapastic.com/episode/148842

Hello there, Deviantart Watchers! I'm so sorry I've been inactive for such a long time. I've mainly been on Facebook and Tapastic. If you want to follow me on Tapastic, here's a link: tapastic.com/ReonMerryweather

Hmm, although I really do miss being on Deviantart. I should write something for you guys, that we can have fun doing together!

Do any of you have an idea? I could write some short stories with artwork, or so?

Recently, me and a friend had a discussion about whether there was such a thing as objectively good or bad writing. While our discussion never came to a conclusion, it did touch on several points, and made me realize why I indeed do not enjoy Sword Art Online.

What is Sword Art Online?

Sword Art Online is a Japanese Light Novel, Manga, and Anime, about 10.000 players caught in a virtual reality version of a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game. The basic premise is, if you die in the game, you die in your comatose sleep.

Sword Art Online follows the adventures of Kirito, a black coated swordsman who fights on the front lines to beat the game, which was promised by their captor, to lead to their escape from this virtual world, and their comatose sleep.

Throughout this story, Kirito encounters many characters, mainly girls, who have supporting roles in his adventure, as well as several villains with differing views on how their situation should be handled.

Sword Art Online became incredibly popular after its Anime adaption aired in Japan, and has grown increasingly popular with a currently running second season, and a number of game and manga adaptions. Despite this, it is also heavily criticized in some circles.

So, why don't I like it?

Kirito does not qualify as a main character.

The story starts out fine enough. We see what the main character sees, we know what the main character knows, and we experience how the main character reacts to the twist at the end of Episode 1, when they are trapped in the game. The story continues into Episode 2, where other players are gathering a raid, and we are introduced to our heroine, Asuna. Everything is going as you'd hope for a story of this genre and concept.

But that is the last we see to this straight forward style of storytelling, that worked fine on its own. From Episode 2, Kirito is treated as a mysterious stranger, despite being the main character of the story. While it does not make too much of a difference, as many of the short stories with the girls he meets, has the story told from their perspective rather than his own, which allows him to be a character that we do not understand.

But as the series goes on, Kirito continues to be treated like a mysterious stranger, despite us seeing it from his eyes. No longer do we know what Kirito knows. We do not know what he is capable of. This makes him unrelatable as a main character.

Sword Art Online would have been better if Asuna was the main character.

In Episode 9, Kirito reveals a hidden ability, Starburst Stream, and his unique dual-wielding powers, which he uses to kill a boss. We have not seen him use this ability before, we have not experienced the trials and tribulations that he had to go through to see him get this ability.

In Dragon Ball, Son Goku trained on a tiny planet with an incredibly higher gravity than Earth, and got beat up by a monkey and a grasshopper, to earn his ability. We saw how tough it was for him to achieve these great new powers, and because of that, we felt he had earned it.

Kirito may have earned his ability, but we never got to share in that experience. We never saw him go through the hardships that one must face to master a new skill, and because of that, he should categorically be considered a secondary character, yet he is treated like the main character.

Kirito's Harem

Sword Art Online has only two secondary male characters that are neither dead nor evil. Klein and Agil. Neither of these characters are ever treated to a romantic interest, and although Agil does get an older woman after they escape, no other characters in this entire series ever have a relationship with another character, unless they're Kirito.

Kirito has single handedly become the sole romantic interest in the entire series. Although he is considered married, by the games standards, he is still constantly surrounded by what can only be considered a harem of girls, desperately attempting to win the favour of a married man.

Even his own sister, who someone was in love with, see him as more of a romantic interest than the boy who seemed to like her. This very boy, disappears, after countless times of being treated by the writer as a short, pathetic, bowl-haired geekboy. From that point onward, Kirito's sister is free to join his harem of school girls who spend their days trying to win the affection by playing MMO games with a married man and his wife.

In Season 2 we are treated to a welcome sight. Sinon, our seasonal heroine, has a love interest, and they seem to have a good relationship going, as he actually saves on his very first appearance, and shows that he cares for her, and tries to help her with his flaws. That is, until Kirito shows up.

Our dear love interest, naturally has an immediate cold gaze towards Kirito, to show off how bad of a person he is. He then ends up out of the picture, as he is affiliated with the season's villain who Kirito defeats, and Sinon is free to become a domesticated cat girl that Kirito adds to his harem.

It is quite clear that in the writers head, he is Kirito. And no girl is allowed to love anyone other than Kirito. If there are other male love candidates, you can count on them being revealed as horrible rapist villains, like Asuna's "fiancé", or pussified geekboys, such as Suguha's classmate.

Until the artist, :iconjowa: returns fully next month, we've decided to re-release Steam Dragon on Tapastic.com!

READ <THE STEAM DRAGON EXPRESS> HERE

tapastic.com/series/The-Steam-…

(Also remember to sign in and subscribe!!)

  1. Typos Fixed
There used to be a lot of typos in the old Steam Dragon uploads, but we've fixed all we could find, in the HD re-release.
  2. Proper Sizing
In the original comic uploads of <The Steam Dragon Express> the sizing used to be off. We've fixed that, and given it a nice 800p width.
  3. Sharper Lines
With better resizing comes sharper and more crisp-looking lines!
  4. Better Colours!
Joakim fixed some colouring mistakes in the previous colour pages!
  5. No Filler Pages
In the full releases of Steam Dragon, we used to have filler pages that told you the other places you can read it, and to like us on Facebook, and whatnot. We've completely removed that.
  6. Shorter Chapters
This one seems like something that isn't really a good update, but with shorter chapters comes much faster releases and much faster pacing!

It's been a while since I've made a journal. I mostly post my stuff on my Facebook these days.

Anyway I promised a friend of mine, :iconeudetenis: that I'd help spread the word!

So you see everyone, Eudetenis' account was unfortunately suspended not too long ago. She has therefore moved to Pixiv where she already had an account. What is Pixiv? It's like the Japanese version of DeviantArt.

If you don't want to make a Pixiv account, you can still follow all of her artwork on Facebook!

Thank You!
